"TREASURE MOUNTAIN" JAPANESE EDO PERIOD INK MONOCHROME LANDSCAPE PAINTING HANGING SCROLL BY GENTAI WATANABE FROM CIRCA 1805
Here's a wonderful Japanese antique EDO PERIOD ink monochrome painting mounted as a hanging scroll by the Nanga artist Gentai Watanabe (1749-1822)) from my personal Japanese art collection. It measures 65 1/4" x 17 3/4" (image on paper 31 1/2" x 13 3/8") plus another 1 3/8" on either side of the bottom including the hinoki wood end caps.
The foreground - middle ground has three Buddhist temple buildings behind several pine trees on a tall island surrounded by a choppy sea. The center area has a "human face" or "doorway image" onto the Buddhist grounds. The background has the imposing "Treasure Mountain" which appears to be inaccessible by humans. The left side has male and female crane birds flying into the area landscape.
It's signed and sealed by Gentai Watanabe on the upper-right side (see photo). The signature is translated as this being painted in late 1805 and "Gentai Shujin Ei" ("Ei' is one of Gentai's pen names and "Shujin" means "master-owner"). The red seal is translated as "Gentai." The top of the back also has some old writing on a mounted paper piece (see photo).
This antique Japanese ink monochrome painting mounted as a hanging scroll is in pretty good condition for being 217 years old. The images have good detail. It has some minor horizontal creases at the center and bottom area. The center right side area of the paper sheet has a small 1/8" x 1/4" scuff and a tiny 1/8" pin hole not affecting the images. The upper-right and top area of the paper sheet has a few small lite stain spots not affecting the images. The brown silk border of the hanging scroll mount has a few tiny stain spots on the upper-left side. The top section of the hanging scroll mount has wear, some old worm holes, and a few pigment loss horizontal lines. The top mounting bar has wear and a small 3/4" paper/silk separation spot on the right edge. The left silk futai (decorative hanging strip) at the top has a small stain and small 1/4" tear where it would be folded when the scroll is rolled up. Please see photos for condition.
