"STREET DRUMMER" INK MONOCHROME PAINTING HANGING SCROLL BY HANABUSA ITCHO FROM CIRCA 1700
Here's a RARE original and authentic simple ink monochrome painting on paper by Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) depicting a street drummer mounted on a hanging scroll from my personal art collection. The hanging scroll measures 44" x 19 3/4" and the mounted paper measures 17" x 12" (actual image 10 1/2" x 6"). Hanabusa Itcho was trained in the Kano School but later excelled in "genre" street scene subject matter such as this street drummer which he would have seen strutting down a street in Edo (Tokyo). Itcho's work can be considered a precursor of the Ukiyo-e (pictures of the fleeting world) subject matter of future Japanese woodblock print artists. This image is full of "implied action" with the street drummer's raised foot and hand as if he's walking down the street while banging on his drum (to the chagrin of the Edo townspeople I would imagine). The use of negative space on the left side implies further "action" as this space gives the street drummer a place to walk to. The humorous depiction of the human figure is exemplified by the street drummer's elongated head which suggests "wisdom" for this "starving street musician" making noise on an Edo street.
This RARE original and authentic Hanabusa Itcho painting mounted as a hanging scroll is in pretty good condition for being about 300 years old. It has even toning, some lite stain spots, horizontal creases and a lite scuff in the lower-center area. The top area of the scroll has some lite moisture stains and 1 1/2" paper separation on the top bar. There are handling creases throughout mainly in the center. The left side has edge bumps and handling creases. The bottom of the mount has some stain spots. One of the bone end caps is missing the top cap and the other end cap has a slit. The blue and gold fabric mount is in good shape with a few scratches. Please see photos for condition. These imperfections from age and normal use do not detract from the wonderful street drummer image.
