Description
Antique Japanese Yuzen-Birodo cut velvet landscape in wood tray with original wavy glass cover.Nishimura Sozaemon, the Kyoto textiles firm, invented this technique in 1868. The velvet was woven by passing the threads over fine metal wires parallel to the woof and then cut to form the pile. The precise cutting would achieve a three dimensional effect. Dyed with yuzen dye.
The first example of Yuzen-Birodo was exhibited at the Second National Industrial Exhibition in Tokyo in 1881.
It is 12 3/8" by 8" and 1" depth
Shows signs of age. Missing a handle, is wood is cracked.
