    (Genku), a Chinese monk, better known as Honen

    (1133-1212), the founder of the Japanese Pure Land School of Buddhism.
    Ink inscription on the back reads “imperial name”
    御名号.
    The date on the scroll cannot be corroborated, but the painting clearly dates at least to the 19th century.  Painting: 53 3/4" x 25 1/2" (scroll: 72” x 31 1/8”).
    Significant wear and old repairs show clear evidence of age.  One of the wood scroll ends is damaged
