Description
The NAD 7225PE is their "highest" end receiver that still contains the original all-discrete 3020 amplifier circuitry. This one has been upgraded "My Way" to Better_Than_New condition as follows;1) I added a custom Remote Control Volume and Mute system with a GREEN/RED Mute LED
2) I recapped the power supplies and all amplifier stages, including the audio coupling caps on the Tuner board. Details on request. Most of the original TEAPO and Elite caps were well within spec, but I still wanted to install newly matched audio coupling and bypass caps throughout both channels. The ELNA Main Caps test and perform like new, so I left them in.
3) I added a Tuner ON/OFF switch to optionally eliminate any potential radio crosstalk during Phono, Video, CD, and TAPE_MON inputs. Tuner OFF also reduces the idle power by about 4 watts.
4) I added a PE ON/OFF switch (in series with the PE Fuses) to optionally return the Power Amp voltage rails to that of the original 3020 amplifier. When PE is ON, it increases the maximum output power but it can also drive the output transistors beyond their safe area, and I wanted to protect and preserve the matched set of ST Microelectronics 3055/2955 Output Transistors. PE OFF also saves idle and operating power while still providing the original 20 "NAD Watts" RMS per channel of the 3020.
Cosmetically, this unit is in excellent condition. See photos. Near mint inside. New ceramic insulators replace the old thermal paste and provide a nice clean appearance.
Best of all, it sounds as good as it looks. Like my 3020, it's one of those amps I find hard to step away from. The Tuner sounds good too, with great separation and impressive bass response.
The custom configuration switches function as follows;
Tuner Switch ON - normal setting. Tuner power is ON. The Mute LED will be RED during MUTE or otherwise OFF.
Tuner Switch OFF - custom setting. Tuner power is OFF. The Mute LED will be YELLOW (RED/GREEN) during MUTE or otherwise GREEN to indicate Power ON (since the Tuner display will be off).
PE Switch ON - normal setting. Power Envelope ON. 25 WPC RMS. Power Amp Voltage = 80V
PE Switch OFF - custom setting. Power Envelope OFF. 20 WPC RMS.Power Amp Voltage = 60V (3020 default).
One caveat about the remote volume system is that on power up, it initializes itself by rotating the volume control all the way down (counterclockwise) and then back to the 9 o'clock position. This takes 15 seconds but can be stopped by pressing Volume Up or Down on the remote.
