    Description

FOR THE SERIOUS COLLECTOR OF HISTORICAL FRAGRANCE PRESENTATIONS: Made for The Hearst Castle.
    Earnest Daltroff
    made
    "Royal Bain de Champagne"
    for California Millionaire
    William Randolf Hearst
in the early 1920's. Hearst explained to Daltroff that, in his newly finished
    Hearst Castle
, he intended to fill his gold bathtubs with Champagne, but could not import enough from France to keep him bathed daily, as he intended: Daltroff then custom blended an elixir intended to turn your bath into Champagne:
    "Royal Bain de Champagne"
(1923) which has since been marketed as an eau de toilette, was actually entirely conceived to be poured in bath water: On this, the only 500ml bottle on ebay incorporating the formula of the original launch period, it is clearly written than
    500ml equals 50 baths
, so the recipe would entail 10ml per bath. About a capful.
Royal Bain de Champagne has historically been a misunderstood product.
It was never intended to be worn or used as an eau de toilette, though the house of Caron ultimately labeled it that way, and even changed its name to "Royal Bain de Caron," as people didn't know what to do with it. I am guessing that more than one recipient of this as a gift attempted to drink it. Because it is neither an oil, nor a foaming agent, it has also suffered a lot of misrepresentation in fragrance blogs, and in other arenas where people write about perfumes: It is true that, for years and years, Caron has made an Eau de Toilette of this scent--but the original, such as we have here--it is wholly meant to be added to the bath water, and in this way, it actually does perform magic. It even gives you precise instructions: In one bath, add 10ml about 3/8th of an ounce: Basically, a cap full.
This bottle has never been opened, and I have never taken it out of its box until photographing it. It's fully sealed.
