TOMIOKA TESSAI
(1836-1924) was a Japanese-style painter and calligrapher born in Kyoto. He is regarded as the last major artist in the
bunjin-ga
tradition and one of the first major artists of Japanese-style painting. He studied under the Buddhist poet Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875). Throughout his life, he served as a Shinto priest and a scholar. He was an extremely prolific painter, and it is estimated that he painted approximately 20,000 paintings in the course of his career.

TANOMURA CHOKUNYU
(1814-1907) was a Nanga painter born in Oita Prefecture. At the age of 9, he moved to Kyoto to become the pupil of the well-known artist Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835). He later became his adopted son. After Chikuden's death, he moved to Osaka. He was mainly a Nanga artist but also calligrapher and Zen-style painter.
