Title:
Zhong Kui (Shoki)
ZHONG KUI (SHOKI)
is a deity in Chinese and Japanese mythology. Traditionally regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings and reputedly able to command 80,000 demons. His image is often painted on household gates as a guardian spirit as well as in places of business where high-value goods are involved. His character was and still is especially popular in New Year pictures.
Signature (Seal):
TANI BUNCHO
(1763-1840) was a literati (
bunjin
) painter and poet. Like most
bunjin-ga
painters of his time, he focused largely on Chinese-inspired landscapes. Since travelling outside Japan was forbidden under the Tokugawa shogunate, he was unable to study in China. Therefore, he spent many years in Nagasaki and studied Chinese art and Western art with traders there.
